Error when activating Server 2008/Windows 7 via KMS

If you’re getting error 0x800705B4 when running Windows Software Licensing Management Tool (slmgr.vbs) when performing an activation at the command line then keep on reading.

When executing slmgr.vbs /ato I got this error:

Activation Windows Server, ServerStandard edition (68531fb9-5511-4989-97be-d11a0f55633f) … On a computer running Microsoft Windows non-core edition, run ‘slui.exe 0x2a 0x800705B4’ to display the error text. Error: 0x800705B4

Key Management Server Error 0x800705B4

Probably the KMS servers’ DNS records couldn’t be found. To resolve this manually point to the KMS server:

slmgr.vbs /skms servername:1688

slmgr.vbs /skms

To find the KMS server in your network, run this command on an activated Windows machine:

Slmgr.vbs /dlv

Now activating using slmgr.vbs /ato is working as it should:

slmgr.vbs /ato

Display license information:

slmg.vbs –dli

All right!

if you have the SRV RR you shouldn’t need to do this though, right?

If your KMS host has a SRV resource record you don’t need this.
